Photographing White-bellied Sea-Eagles – In the Strike Zone

This article is a guide on how I go about photographing White-bellied Sea-Eagles in the strike zone and details my method for capturing intimate full frame shots at close quarters. It is designed to be adapted by the individual photographer according to his or her own personal circumstances and comfort zone. That is to say that all aspects of my method will not suit everybody and for good reason, I get CLOSE! And not everyone will want to share personal space with a wild Sea-Eagle.

Topics covered in this article include:

  • Finding your birds

  • Habituating your Sea-Eagles

  • Selecting a lure

  • Equipment

  • Timing and final adjustments

  • Presenting the lure

  • Photographic opportunities

  • The strike

Floating hides - Part 1

Floating hides - Part 1 is the first issue of a three-part series on the topic. Stay tuned for upcoming issues: Constructing a floating hide - Part 2 and Floating hides: tips and tricks - Part 3.

This EGuide provides an overview of how I set up my floating hide to capture full frame images of wild non-habituated birds that I otherwise would not have managed to approach.  I discuss my method for taking intimate images with a low point of view, the equipment I use to do the job and how not to disturb the subjects and other wildlife.

To demonstrate the above, I set myself the challenge of photographing three species of waterbird that can be difficult to approach:

1. Great Cormorant

2. Little Pied Cormorant

3. Great Crested Grebe.
